Select Chorus

The Newark Valley Select Chorus is a four-part choir comprised of the best singers in the school who must audition to be accepted. The Select Chorus challenges its members by performing all a capella, high level music, which they must sight read and learn. They perform at school concerts and volunteer at community events all throughout the school year.

Senior Chorus

This group is for students who have previously participated in chorus.  Most of the students are in 10th-12th grade.  The music is advanced and requires practice in your own time. This group performs in three concerts a year. The material covered ranges from classical, to multicultural, or popular music. We hope that the Senior Chorus will be competing at NYSSMA Majors very soon!

Women's Chorus

This group is for any women who have previously participated in chorus. Most of the students are in 10th-12th grade. The music is advanced and requires practice in your own time. This group performs in three concerts a year. The material covered ranges from classical, to multicultural, or popular music. This group competes at the NYSSMA Majors Festival in the spring. You do not have to audition to participate in this group.

Show Choir

Glee Fans? Here’s your chance to be in a group similar to that. Show Choir is for any student who is willing to make the commitment.  Show Choir not only involves singing but also incorporates dance and other choreographed moves. You do not have to audition to be in the group, however, if you are new to Choir or not in Choir you will have to sing for voice placement. This group rehearses during lessons and after school.

Intermediate Chorus

This chorus is for any and all students here at the High School. Any incoming 8th grader who wants to be in chorus will be placed in Intermediate Chorus. This group performs in three concerts a year. The material covered ranges from classical, to multicultural, to popular music.   You do not have to audition to participate in this group.

Symphonic Band

Symphonic Band members audition to perform in this group. The band focuses on music that ranges in NYSSMA ratings 4-6. These include pieces that vary in genre and style. This band is made up mostly of 11th and 12th graders but will accommodate exceptionally talented younger students as well. The Symphonic Band and Concert Band also combine once a year to march in the homecoming parade.

Jazz Ensemble

Jazz Ensemble is provided for students who are members of the Concert and Symphonic Band that wish to pursue the idiom of jazz music. Jazz Ensemble meets every other day. In this ensemble students will perform as an ensemble and as a soloist and explore different styles of jazz and pop. The Jazz Ensemble will perform at concerts and school functions throughout the school year. Students in this course are required to audition and/or have prior approval from the band director.

Concert Band

Concert Band is a group that involves any student that would like to learn an instrument for the first time or for a student that has been playing for a few years. The band performs a varied genre of pieces that are rated as NYSSMA levels 2-4. This band is designed to give students the time and experience to be able to perform with the Symphonic Band. Anyone in grades 8-12 may participate in this band. The Concert Band and Symphonic Band also combine once a year to march in the homecoming parade.

Jazz Band

Jazz Band is similar to Jazz Ensemble in that many different styles of music. This band is designed to give students the skills and knowledge to be able to play with the Jazz Ensemble. Students must perform in either Concert Band or Symphonic Band in order to participate in Jazz Band. The Jazz Band performs not only for school concerts but also for younger grade levels and in community events. This is a non-auditioned group.
