NVHS Captures Five First-Place Trophys

NVHS Jazz Ensemble

NVHS Music students show off their rewards after a morning of performances and an afternoon of fun at Dorney Park, PA.

The Symphonic Band, Jazz Ensemble, Mixed Chorus, Select Choir and Women's Octet met at the High School on the morning of Saturday, May 18th for a day of performance and fun. The five NVHS musical groups traveled south to be judged on their performances and to spend some time in Dorney Park.

After loading up instruments and equipment, two buses of vocalists and musicians left around 6:00 am bound for Allentown, Pennsylvania. After a long, but comfortable, ride they faced a tight agenda. Upon arrival at 9:00 am the bands, instruments and equipment made their way to the rehearsal room to warm up. By 9:40, the Symphonic Band was performing on stage, followed by the Jazz Ensemble. Then, it was time for everything to be packed back on the buses for a quick trip to the location for the vocal performances. By 11:00, the Mixed Chorus was warmed up and ready to go. Select Choir was next at 11:20, followed by the Women’s Octet at 11:40.

After each piece performed, directors and students waited in silence as the judges took notes on what they just heard. Observers couldn’t help but wonder what the judges were noting and how this would translate into the final score. When the signal was given that the judges were ready, the directors lead the students in to the next piece.

Finally by noon, the performances were over and it was time to have some fun at the park. Everyone was back on the buses for the short jaunt to Dorney Park. Plenty of roller coasters, water rides and carnival attractions awaited the students as a reward for their efforts. Even Miss Preston and Mrs. Wilday were seen on a roller coaster or two.

Students checked in at lunch and again for the Awards Ceremony in the park. They were joined by other groups from New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Virginia to see how the morning events were received. The results were first place trophies for each of the NVHS groups with ratings ranging from Good to Excellent. For the first time that day, cheers of excitement drowned out the screams from the roller coasters.

Head Home

At 6:00 pm, 12 hours after leaving the High School parking lot, it was time to get back on the buses for home. A tired bunch of students, teachers and chaperones arrived back “home” at 9:30 pm to unload and congratulate each other on a great job, a rewarding effort and a fun day in PA.

Congratulations to the Symphonic Band, Jazz Ensemble, Mixed Chorus, Select Choir and Women's Octet, as well as our great director’s. Mrs. Wilday and Miss Preston did another fantastic job of preparing our students and planning this wonderful opportunity.
